Meet Susan Dalrymple, the newest artist-in-residence at Quest Art School + Gallery's Art Is Love Space!

Susan, a talented stained glass artist from Midland, Ontario, is currently creating inspiring pieces that reflect her unique vision and craftsmanship. Her vibrant works are now on display in the Art Is Love Space, showcasing the beauty of stained glass in new and exciting ways.

Join us as we gain insight into Susan's world and discover the unique vision she is contributing to the rich creative fabric that is Quest.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your background in the arts.

I have lived in Midland for 23 years and been doing stained glass for over 16 years. I

enjoy teaching and sharing my love of the art. I am an instructor and teach workshops

at a professional glass studio as well as for my own clients.

What specific project or body of work do you plan to focus on during your Art is

Love residency?

I plan on using my time at the residency to create more pieces and demonstrate the

process either as I’m working on a piece or in workshops.

Are there any particular themes or concepts you're interested in exploring during

your time here?

Some northern Ontario/Muskoka themes, and I’ll create pieces as they inspire me. I will

also make some Christmas-themed items in anticipation of the MCC Market.

What materials or techniques do you plan to experiment with or incorporate into

your work during the residency?

I plan on making a snowshoe and incorporating a vintage plate into my work, as well as

beautiful and unique glass.

How do you envision your work evolving or changing as a result of this residency

experience?

Practice is always beneficial, and incorporating ideas from visitors is always interesting.

How do you hope to engage with the local community or other artists during your

time here?

I have a sign in the window inviting people to come and see my work and “try their hand

at stained glass” at an on-site workshop. I have had many people drop in to see my

work as they pass by, attend shows or pick up tickets. Seeing me working

on a project has intrigued some people, who have come in and asked what I’m doing. This is a great opportunity to engage in conversation and tell them about Quest.

What advice would you give to other artists considering applying for a residency

program like this one?

Do it to enjoy and share your art in a beautiful studio with lots of space and natural light.

How do you see this residency contributing to your long-term artistic goals or

aspirations?

I have received inquiries about doing commissioned work, which will challenge me and

push me out of my comfort zone.
