The Art of Perspective: A Two-Part Online Workshop Join artist Barb Simmons for a two-part online workshop exploring the fundamentals of two-point perspective and how it can transform the way you approach drawing and painting. Everything we draw or paint representationally can be distilled to shapes. Understanding perspective can help your artwork feel more believable, balanced, and realistic—and when something in a drawing or painting just doesn’t look quite right, perspective is often the place to look. Across two Zoom sessions, Barb will introduce the theory behind two-point perspective and guide participants through practical drawing and painting exercises. We’ll explore how perspective can be used to simplify and understand everything from buildings to natural forms like rocks and trees. Session One – September 16th: Two-Point Perspective & Buildings We’ll begin with the fundamentals of two-point perspective, learning how to construct buildings and use perspective to create a convincing landscape. We’ll start by working through the drawing process before applying what we’ve learned to a landscape featuring a house or building. Homework: Create a landscape sketch featuring at least one building or house, then develop it into an 8 × 10 painting before the next session. Session Two – September 17th: Perspective in the Landscape In the second session, we’ll apply the principles of two-point perspective to natural forms, including rocks and trees. Barb will demonstrate how breaking complex shapes down using perspective can make them easier to understand, draw, and paint convincingly. Whether you’re new to perspective or looking to strengthen your existing drawing and painting skills, this workshop will give you practical tools you can continue using in your own practice.
